WIFE
New Order, ‘World in Motion’ – The song Steve was plugging which got us talking. In fact, the first gift Steve gave me was a pair of huge, white baggy shorts with ‘World in Motion’ emblazoned down the side. I don’t think I ever actually wore them. When I hear this track I think of Steve and the giddy feeling of falling in love. But it also seems to sum up my life – a moving kaleidoscope of motherhood, family, work, relationship; a set of disparate shards twisting together to make a beautiful, chaotic whole.
Cocteau Twins, ‘Iceblink Luck’ – Steve and I saw the Cocteau Twins play at the Town and Country Club, now The Forum, in Kentish Town, when we were first together and everything about this heavenly love song sums up those early, heady days.
The Rolling Stones, ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ – But if you try sometimes, you might just find, you get what you need. Steve wants those lyrics on his gravestone. I’d never really listened to the Stones before I met Steve, they weren’t a band Mum and Dad played. He made me listen carefully to the lyrics and I was drawn in to the narrative of the track.
Van Morrison, ‘Angelou’ – Another musician I’d never heard of. Steve and I spent hours sitting up late, drinking and listening to him during our first summer of love.
